5 Forms of Text

Five Forms of Text

Advertising

In this hyper-mediated world, advertising is everywhere. It has grown to be a part of American culture, almost an American tradition (see: Mad Men). I think that advertising is definitely an alive text because it is constantly around us in this world and shift and shapes according to the supply and demand of consumers and society.

Book

I would argue that a book is both a dead text and an alive text. I believe that it is dead because the author cannot come up to you personally and argue why they did the certain artistic choices they did. However,  it is also an alive text in that it can constantly be re-issued and passed along to other generations.

Graffiti

Graffiti is an interesting text because it allows the writer to write in the rawest moment. I believe that graffiti is the result of someone that has so much to say that they cannot hold it in any longer and the end result is them expressing themselves onto a wall or a building or a sign. In that sense, I believe that this text is alive.

Newspaper

I believe that newspaper as a form of media is essentially dead, however, as a text it is alive because it is still miraculously being circulated around and a lot of newspaper companies also have a thriving digital text online as well.

Blog Post

Blogs have given writers the ability to explore and share their talents and writing ability with the world. I think the relationship between the writer and a blog post is still very personal, because it is on their own blog, but it is also detached in that is digital and nothing digital can seem as personal as a journal entry. However, in this ever-changing digital world, I think that blog posts are definitely alive in that they can be shared and linked to within seconds and that is very concurrent with these times.
